3、nminingventuresbeforetakingupajournalisticcareer(underthenameMarkTwain)whicheventuallycarriedhimtoCaliforniaandHawaii,experiencesrecountedinRoughingIt(1872).Henexttrav-elledtoEuropeandtheHolyLandwithanexcursionparty,thebasisforTheInnocentsAbroad(1869),ahumorousnarra
4、tivethatquicklyestablishedhisreputationandlaunchedhiscareerasacomiclecturer.AftermarryingOliviaLangdonin1870,ClemensabandonedthelecturecircuitandmovedtoHartford,Connecticut,wherehewrotemostofthebooksbywhichheisknown,inaperiodofgreatprosperitythatwasendedin1894bybank
5、ruptcyresultingfromincautiousinvestments.Returningtothelecturecircuit,Clemensrecoveredhisfortune,buthislaterlifewasdarkenedbytragedy,includingthedeathsofhisfavouritedaughter,Susy,andhiswife.Anotherdaughter,Jean,sufferedfromepilepsyanddiedin1909,followedshortlybyherfa
