3、ofthesystemandwouldlearntostrugglefortheirfreedom.Slaveshadtoworklonghoursineveryunhealthyconditions.Theirownershadcompletepoweroverthem.Theycouldbeboughtandsoldlikeanimals.Attheslavemarkets,blackchildrenwereseparatedfromtheirparentsandneverallowedtoseethemagain.Slaveown
4、ershadtherighttopunishtheslaveswhobrokethelaworwasagainstthesystem.Slaveswereoftenbeatenorevenkilledbytheirowners.AftertheCivilWar,onefreeslavereportedthathisownerkilledanolderslavewhowasteachinghimtoread.Intheoryanownerwhotreatedaslavebadlycouldbepunished.Inpractice,how
5、ever,thelawmeantnothing.OppositiontoslaverybeganveryearlyinthehistoryoftheUS—in1671—butlittleprogresswasmadeuntilthebeginningofthenineteenthcentury.By1804slaverywasillegalinthenorthernstates.Butitcontinued,andevengrew,inthesouthernstates,whichdependedoncottonfortheirecon
