3、aveswouldbegintothinkabouttheinjusticeofthesystemandwouldlearntostrugglefortheirfreedom.Slaveshadtoworklonghoursineveryunhealthyconditions.Theirownershadcompletepoweroverthem.Theycouldbeboughtandsoldlikeanimals.Attheslavemarkets,blackchildrenweresepara
4、tedfromtheirparentsandneverallowedtoseethemagain.Slaveownershadtherighttopunishtheslaveswhobrokethelaworwasagainstthesystem.Slaveswereoftenbeatenorevenkilledbytheirowners.AftertheCivilWar,onefreeslavereportedthathisownerkilledanolderslavewhowasteaching
5、himtoread.Intheoryanownerwhotreatedaslavebadlycouldbepunished.Inpractice,however,thelawmeantnothing.OppositiontoslaverybeganveryearlyinthehistoryoftheUS—in1671—butlittleprogresswasmadeuntilthebeginningofthenineteenthcentury.By1804slaverywasillegalinthe
6、northernstates.Butitcontinued,andevengrew,inthesouthernstates,whichdependedoncottonfortheireconomicwealth.SlaveryendedintheSouthonlyaftertheCivilWar.Forblacks,however,theendofslaverywasonlyabeginning,thelatebeginningofalonganddifficultstrugglefortrueju
