2、fit.Keywords:nonverbalcommunication,classroomEnglishteaching I.IntroductionAsweknow,ouraimtoteachlanguage,especiallyaforeignlanguage,istoteachthestudentshowtouselanguagetocommunicatemoreeffectivelywithotherpeople.However,foralongtime,wehavelaidmuchemphasisonthestudents’abilityofv
3、erbalcommunication,bothinoralandwrittenform,whileneglectingthatofnonverbalcommunication,anindispensablepartofcommunication.Infact,nonverbalcommunicationplaysanimportantroleinourdailycommunication.AccordingtoMehrabianandWeiner(1967,inGoss,1983:44),thereisaformulatoshowtherelativew
4、eightsthatverbalandnonverbalmessagesplayinexpressingaspeaker’sidea:speaker’sattitude=words(7%)+toneofvoice(38%)+facialexpression(55%).Thatistosay,over90%ofone’sattitudeiscommunicatednonverbally.Forthis,weshouldpayattentiontonotonlywhatwesay,butalsohowwesay.AsEnglishteachers,wecan
5、improveourteachingandachievebetterresultsifwecanappropriatelyusenonverbalcommunicationinclassroomteaching.II.DefinitionandTypesofNonverbalCommunication2.1DefinitionofNonverbalCommunicationManyscholarshavegiventhedefinitionofnonverbalcommunication.AsZeuschner(1997:80)putsit,nonver
6、balcommunicationreferstotheinformationthatistransmittedfromsenderstoreceiverswhenthedominantmeaningisnotconveyedbytheuseofwords.Italsomeansthatnonverbalcommunicationisyouruseofinteractingsetsofvisual,vocalandinvisiblecommunicationsystemstoconveyandinterpretmeaning(Leathers,1992,i
7、nZeuschner,1997:80).2.2TypesofNonverbalcommunicationGenerallyspeaking,thestudyofnonverbalcommunicationbehaviorcanbedividedintothreemainareas:paralanguage,kinesicsandproxemics.2.2.1ParalanguageParalanguage,sometimescalledvocalics,isthestudyofthespeaker’svoice.Peoplecanusuallymakej
