1、Oneofmyfavouritedictaisthatpeopleshouldnotbecategorizedasgoodorevil,wiseorstupid.Itwouldbemuchmoresensibletodividethemsimplyintolearnersandnon-learners.Inbetweenthetwoextremeswouldbeabroadspectrumgradedonthedegreetowhichindividualsarecapableofcorrectassessmentandunder

2、standingofthelearningmaterialattheirdisposal.HereofcourseI’mgivingaverybroaddefinitiontolearning.Itwouldinvolvemuchmorethanwhatcouldbeacquiredfromanyoneinstitutionorfromanyoneformalteacher.Itwouldmeanaprocessofgainingsuchknowledgeandexperienceaswouldhelpustocopewithth

3、echallengesthatlifethrowsatusandtofindwaysofenhancingourownexistence,aswellasthatofasgreataportionaspossibleofalltheotheroccupantsofourplanet.Toputitinanotherway,thehighestformoflearningwouldbethatwhichmakesuscaringandresponsiblecitizensofthisworld,andequipsuswiththei

4、ntellectualmeansnecessarytotranslateourconcernsintospecificdeeds.SurelysuchaviewoflearningisinharmonywiththeideaofeducationasconceivedinthemottoofHongKongUniversity–WisdomandVirtue.Onehundredyearsoffurnishingtheworldwithyoungpeoplewhohavebeenprovidedwiththecapacitytot

5、hinkindependently,toexpressthosethoughtscogently,andtousethemforthebettermentofourworldisanachievementofwhichthisUniversitycanbejustlyproud.Thehopesofitsfoundingfathershavebeenmorethanrealized.AtthefoundationlayingceremonySirFrederickLugardhopedthatthegraduatesofTheUn

6、iversityofHongKongwouldexertaninfluencewhichwillbeimmeasurableinthefutureamongthe400millionsofChina’spopulation.Littlecouldhehaveenvisagedsuchaninstitutionasthisoneoftoday,internationallyrenownedandonethatattractsstudentsfromallovertheworld,whowillonedayexertanever-wi

7、deninginfluenceonthefutureofmorethanjustonecountry.AsIcontemplatetheachievementsofHongKongUniversity,Iamfilledwithdeepadmirationandalso,ithastobeadmitted,withwistfulness.WheneverIconsidertheeducationalprogressthathasbeenmadeinothercountries,Ithinkwithsadnessofthedeplo
