3、ationsmadeofmedicamentsandsuitablebases,whichareintendedforexternalapplicationtotheskin.Ointmentsbasesrecognizedforuseasvehiclesdistinguishedintothreegeneralclasses:theoleaginous,theemulsionbases,andthewater-solublebases.Anointmentisintendedforexternal
4、applicationtotheskinormucousmembranes.Ointmentshaveawaternumberthatdefinesthemaximumamountofwaterthatitcancontain.Theyareusedasemollientsorfortheapplicationofactiveingredientstotheskinforprotective,therapeutic,orprophylacticpurposesandwhereadegreeofocc
5、lusionisdesired.Ointmentsareusedtopicallyonavarietyofbodysurfaces・Theseincludetheskinandthemucousmembranesoftheeye(aneyeointment),chest,vulva,anus,andnose・Anointmentmayormaynotbemedicated.Ointmentsareusuallyverymoisturizing,andgoodfordryskin・Theyhaveal
6、owriskofsensitizationduetohavingfewingredientsbeyondthebaseoilorfat,andlowirritationrisk・Thereistypicallylittlevariabilitybetweenbrandsofgenericsandnamebranddrugs.Theyareoftendislikedbypatientsduetogreasiness.[2]Thevehicleofanointmentisknownastheointme
