1、DefiningNationalCulture:TheCaseofContemporaryChinaAbstract：Thepresentessayisanattempttoconceptualizethenationalcultureofthenation-stateand,basedonthisconceptualization,toexplorethenatureofthenationalcultureofcontemporaryChina.Itsmainargumentsareasfollows:Thenationalcul

2、tureofthenation-stateisdefinednotbytraditionalculturesortheirsurvivingelements,butbyitsrelationtothenationaleconomyandthenationalpoliticsofthenation-state.Someelementsoftraditionalculturescansurviveinthemodernworld,becausetheyareconducivetoorcompatiblewiththeprogressof

3、modernity.Theseelements,whenintegratedintothenationalcultureofthenation-state,canbeinstrumentaltoitsformation、butthenationalcultureofthenation-statecannotbeattributedorreducedtotraditionalculturesortheirsumvingelements.Thenationalcultureofanation-stateisdefinedbythenat

4、ion-stateitself,oritisconditionedprimarilybyitsnationaleconomyandnationalpolitics.Tobemorespecific,thenationalcultureofthenation-statemustaccommodateitsdevelopmenttowardindustrialization(andnowinformatization)intheeconomicsphere,anditmustendorsetheprincipleof“People'sS

5、overeigntyvinthepoliticalsphere(howeveritisunderstoodandpracticed).Therefore,thenationalcultureofcontemporaryChinaasanation-stateistobereadinthecontextofitsongoingeconomicandpoliticaltransformations.ThesurvivingelementsofChinesetraditions(theConfuciantraditioninparticu

6、lar)arerelevanttothenationalcultureofcontemporaiyChina,notbecauseofhowtraditionaloruniquetheyare,butbecauseoftheiraffinitywithincreasinglyglobalizedmodernity.摘耍：木文旨在对民族国家的民族文化做一个概念上的规定，并基于该规定而对当代中国的民族文化进行初步的探讨。木文的主耍论点如下：民族国家的民族文化不是由残存于民族国家的传统文化所决定的，而是由它与民族国家的现代化进程的关系所决

7、定的。传统文化中的某些因索可能是为现代性兼容的，#至会有助于现代化，因而它们能残存于现代世界。这些因素可能会融入到民族国家的民族文化中，但民族文化不能被归结于或还原为传统文化或其残存的因素。民族国家的民族文化是由民族国家本身所规定的，毋宁说它必须服务于民族国家的现代化进程。在经济上，民族文化必须为民族国家的工业化(和现今的信息化)发展提供文化条件；在政治上，民族文化的基本内容则是启蒙运动所倡导的“人民主权”的原则(无论该原则是如何被理解和实践的)。因此，当代中国的民族文化也必须从当代屮国的经济发展和政治状况屮得到解读。中国的传统文化

8、(尤其是儒学传统)的一•些残存因素能融入到当代中国的民族文化中，但这并不意味着当代中国的民族文化是传统的或独特的，而只不过说明中国的传统文化与日益全球化的现代性有某种亲和性。Keywords:nationalculture,natio
