3、ingandItemResponseTheory.WithSIETTE,teachersworldwidecandefinetheirtests,andtheirstudentscantakethesetestson-line.Thetestsaregeneratedaccordingtoteachers’specificationsandareadaptive,thatis,thequestionsareselectedintelligentlytofitthestudent’slevelofknowledge.Inthisway,weobtainmoreaccuratee
4、stimationsofstudent’sknowledgewithsignificantlyshortertests.Byusingthecomputer,largerquestiondatabasescanbestored,selectionalgorithmscanbeperformedefficiently,andquestionscanincludemultimediacontent.TheuseofJavaappletsallowstheinclusionofexecutablecontentinquestionstemand/oranswers,sothestu
5、dentcaninteractwiththesystembymeansofthisapplet.Inthisway,newpossibilitiesareaddedtoComputerAdaptiveTests,suchasusingtraditionalmultiple-choicequestionstogetherwithquestionswhoseanswerisevaluatedbytheappletitself.INTRODUCTIONAssessmenthasalwaysbeenaveryimportantstepinthelearningprocess.Itsd
6、ifferentformsaremotivatedbyitsdifferentpurposes:exams,soteacherscanknowifastudenthasreachedtheappropriatelevelofknowledge;self-assessment,forstudentstocheckhowmuchtheyarelearning;questions,sothatteacherscanprovidethepropertypeoffeedbackwhileteaching,etc.Withtheadventofcomputers,newpossibili
