2、.Basedonprimarydatacollectedviaaself-administeredsurveyinShanghaiandHongKongandresultsofsimilarstudiesconductedinEuropeandtheUnitedStates,weprovideevidencetoshowthatChineseconsumersaremoresupportiveofCSR.WealsoshowthatCarroll’spyramidofresponsibilitiescanbeappliedinChina.Weevaluatedtheimportancep
3、lacedbyChineseconsumersonthefourresponsibilitiesoffirms–economic,legal,ethicalandphilanthropic–andfindthateconomicresponsibilitiesaremostimportantwhilephilanthropicresponsibilitiesareofleastimportance.Thenatureofthesedifferencesisimportantforfirmsintendingtousecorporatesocialresponsibilityforstra
4、tegicpurposes.CSRhasmadeit’smarkasanimportantareainbusinessliterature.Theincreasingnumberofarticlesinleadingbusinessjournalsanddedicatedjournalstotheareaprovideampleevidencetothiseffect.Atthesametime,thesocialresponsibilityofbusinessesisalsogainingpopularityamongotherstakeholders.Forinstance,the2
5、006ConeMillenialCauseStudyfoundthat61%ofthemillenials(thosebornbetween1979and2001)feelthatitistheirresponsibilitytomaketheworldabetterplace,while78%believethatcompanieshavearesponsibilitytojointhemintheirefforts(www.coneinc.com).Thepopulartalentshow,AmericanIdol,showcasedpovertyinAfricainits2007s
6、eason,andcalledforparticipationofitsviewers(individualsandbusinesses)tohelperadicateit.InarecentsurveybyMcKinsey,89%ofconsummerssurveyedbelievedthatcompaniesshouldbalancetheirobligationstotheirshareholderswiththeircontributiontothebroadercommongood,whileonly48%ofthe4063consumerssurveyedinChina,Fr
7、ance,Germany,theUK,India,JapanandtheUSfeelthatcompaniesaremakinganymeaningfulcontributiontothecause(Boninietal.,2007a).Inthe1980sand1990s,CSRliteraturefocusedonthecorporation’sengagementinsocialresponsibilitiesfromabus
