2、paralleledtheconsolidationofthesupplierbasethathastakenplace.Thesetwotrendshavebroughtnewchallengesandopportunitiestothesuppliercommunity.ELMInternational'sdatabaseoftier-onesuppliersintheUnitedStatescontainsapproximately1,500companies.Ofthesecompanies,86areownedorcontrolledbyEuropeanparents
3、,and292areownedorcontrolledbyJapaneseparents.SeveralothersareownedorcontrolledbyCanadian,Australian,andBraziliancompanies.Formostofthiscenturytheautoindustrywasalocalindustry.WiththeexceptionofFordandGM—andforaperiodoftime,Chrysler—design,engineering,andnon-CKD(completeknockdown)productionby
4、eachoftheautomakerstookplaceinthehomeregion.TherewereinstanceswhereCKDproductiondevelopedintofullproductionsuchasFiatandVolkswageninBrazilandVolkswageninMexico.GlobalizationbeyondFordandCMbegantakingholdinthe'70sandincreasedrapidlyinthe'80sand'90s.HondaandNissanwerethefirstJapaneseautomakers
5、tobecomeactiveinbothEuropeandNorthAmerica.Toyotahasveryaggressivelyfollowedtheleadandnowhasassemblyplantsspreadthroughouttheworld.Suzuki,althoughmuchsmallerthantheabove-mentionedautomakers,hasbeenveryactiveinregionswheretheirsmallcarsandtrucksareindemand.TheywentinearlytoIndiaandHungaryandar
6、eactiveinotherpartsofAsiaandEasternEurope.FiatandVolkswagenhavebeenactiveinEasternEuropeandLatinAmericaaswellasChina.MercedesandBMW,longweddedtotheirGermanoperations,arenowbuildingplantsintheUnitedStates,Brazil,andMexico.EvenChrysler,whichsolditsEuropeanoperationsanumberofyearsago,nowhasajoi
