4、videdinto“quality”paperswhichareseriouswithlong,informativearticles,and“popular”papersknownastabloidsbecauseoftheirsmallersize.Tabloidsarelessseriousandcontainmorehumanintereststoriesthannews.Inthe1980sanewqualitypaper,theindependent,andanewtabloid,today,wereintroduced.Todayhadpictures
5、andpagesincolourandthatstartedafashion;nowmosttabloidsareincolour.Newspapersarealmostalwaysfinanciallyindependentofanypoliticalparty.Nevertheless,duringgeneralelectioncampaignsmanypapersremendtheirreaderstovoteforaparticularpoliticalparty.Thepaper'seditorusuallywritesanopenlettercalled
6、a'leader'tothereaders.Ownershipofthenational,Londonandregionaldailynewspapersisconcentratedinthehandsoflargepresspublishinggroups.Intheearly1990sthegovernment'sBroadcastingBillaimedtopasslawstopreventtoomuchmediaownershipbeinginthehandsofoneindividualororganisation.2.BroadcastingBBCrad
