2、hpriorstudieshaveidentifiedseveralfactorsthatimpactontheFDIdecisionofamultinationalenterprise(MNE),thosedeterminantsaregenerallyapplicableonlytothespecificcontextconsidered,orelseaffectjusttheinitialmarketentry.AcomprehensivetheoreticalformulationthathelpstoanalyzepatternsofFDIacrossdif
3、ferentgeographicalregionshasprovedelusive.SuchFDIpatternsalsoneedtobeexaminedovertime,becausefactorsfavoringanMNE’sinitialinvestmentintoacountrycouldchange,promptingittomovenewinvestmentselsewhere.Severalstrategicconsiderationscouldmotivatesuchshifts,suchasincreasedcompetitiveintensitya
4、ttheoriginallocation,cost-cuttingrequirementswhichpromptthesearchfornewlow-costproductionlocations,orpressuretoenternewmarketsinresponsetosimilarmovesbyrivals.MeasuresundertakenbyvariousgovernmentsinliberalizinginvestmentregimesalsoprofoundlyaffectFDIdecisions.FDItrends,hence,areacomple
5、x,multi-dimensionalphenomenon,whichneedstobeexaminedfrommacro-economicaswellasfirmstrategyperspectivesforamorerealisticanalysis.Asregardsthelevelofanalysis,ideallyFDIshouldbeexaminedatthefirmlevel,giventhateachMNE’sinvestmentdecisionisaffectedbyitsuniquestrategicobjectives.But,asanyanal
6、ysisofFDItrendswouldindicate,MNEsofteninvestinaparticularcountryorregionvirtuallyenbloc,notwithstandingidiosyncraticvariationsinindividualinvestmentdecisions.Therushamongstrivalstoenteremergingmarketsoftentriggersthisbandwagoneffect(Knickerbocker,1973).ShiftsinFDIdestinationsovertimecan
