5、beendemonstratedthatcertainlow-dimensionalstructurescanhavevaluesofthefigure-of-meritthatexceedthosefoundinbulkmaterials.ThisallowsustoupgradeourpredictedlimitforZTto,perhaps,20.Ifthisvaluewereeventuallyachieved,thermoelectricenergyconverterswouldhavenolessthanabout50%oftheefficiencyofaCarnotcycle.The

6、performancewouldthenbecomparablewiththebestthatislikelytobeachievedusingconvertersthatarebasedonthevacuumdiode.Severalattemptshavebeenmadeinthepasttoestimatethemaximumthermoelectricfigure-of-meritthatwilleverbereached.ThereisnorestrictionplacedonthevalueofZTbythermodynamicssince,ifthisquantityeverbec

7、ameinfinite,thethermoelectricefficiencywouldstillbenogreaterthanthatoftheCarnotcycle.Realisticconsiderationssuggestthatthermocoupleswillneverapproachthisidealefficiency.Atroomtemperature,thebestthermoele
