1、METHOD1120DERMALCORROSION1.0SCOPEANDAPPLICATION1.1Thedermalcorrosionassaysystemisaninvitrotestmethodwhichdeterminesthecorrosivepotentialofasubstancetowardhumanskin.Themethodissimple,rapid,accurate,andmaybeappliedtobothsolids,liquidsandemulsions.Theliquidsmaybeaqueousornon-aqueous.S

2、olidscanbewater-solubleornon-soluble.Thesamplesmaybepurechemicals,dilutions,formulations,orwaste.Nopriortreatmentofthesampleisrequired.Thismethodmaybeusedtomeetcertainregulatoryapplications,e.g.,DOTcorrosivitymeasurementforPackingGroups,butisnotrequiredfordeterminingifawastepasseso

3、rfailsthecharacteristicofcorrosivitypertheRCRAdefinition.1.2Thismethodisapplicabletoalimitednumberofmaterials,specifically:Acids,inorganicandorganic;acidderivatives(anhydride,haloacids,salts,etc.),inorganicandorganic;acylhalides;alkylaminesandpolyalkylamines;bases,inorganicandorgan

4、ic;chlorosilanes;andmetalhalidesandoxyhalides.2.0SUMMARYOFMETHOD2.1Theassaysystemisaninvitrotestmethodwhichiscomposedoftwocomponents,asyntheticmacromolecularbiobarrierandaChemicalDetectionSystem(CDS).Testsamplesareappliedontopofthemacromolecularbiobarrier.Corrosivesamplesareabletod

5、isruptthemacromolecularstructureofthebiobarrier.AcolorchangeintheCDS,locatedbeneaththebiobarrier,isdetectedvisuallyandindicatesthatthetestsamplehasalteredthebiobarriersufficientlytoallowitspassagethroughthefullthicknessofthebiobarrier.Thetimeittakesasampletodisruptthebiobarrierisin

6、verselyproportionaltothedegreeofcorrosivityofthesample-thelongerittakestoobserveacolorchange,thelesscorrosivethesubstanceis.Noncorrosivesamplesdonotdisruptthebiobarrier,ordisruptthebiobarrierafterapredeterminedtimeperiod(seeSection2.4).Corrosivesamplesmaybeplacedintothreedifferentc

7、lassesofcorrosivity,establishedbythetimerequiredforthesampletobreakthroughthebiobarrier.TheseclassesarecalledPackingGroupsbytheU.S.DepartmentofTransportation(DOT).PackingGroupsareassignedaccordingtothedegreeofdangerpresentedbythecorrosivematerial;PackingGroupIindicatesgreatdanger;P
