1、METHOD1030IGNITABILITYOFSOLIDS1.0SCOPEANDAPPLICATION1.1Thismethodissuitableforthedeterminationoftheignitabilityofsolidsandisappropriateforpastes,granularmaterials,solidsthatcanbecutintostrips,andpowderysubstances.Thismethodmaybeusedtomeetcertainregulatoryapplications;
2、withrespecttothecharacteristicofignitabilityinCFR§261.21,thismethodmaybeused,butisnotrequired,todeterminewhetherasolidwastewhenignited,burnssovigorouslyandpersistentlythatitcreatesahazard.Ifitisimpracticaltoperformthetestbecauseofthephysicalformofthesample,generatorkn
3、owledgeshouldbeusedtodeterminetheignitabilityhazardposedbythematerial.2.0SUMMARYOFMETHOD2.1Inapreliminarytest,thetestmaterialisformedintoanunbrokenstriporpowdertrain250mminlength.Anignitionsourceisappliedtooneendofthetestmaterialtodeterminewhethercombustionwillpropaga
4、tealong200mmofthestripwithinaspecifiedtimeperiod.Materialsthatpropagateburningalonga200mmstripwithinthespecifiedtimeperiodarethensubjectedtoaburningratetest.Materialsthatdonotigniteorpropagatecombustionasdescribedabovedonotrequirefurthertesting.Intheburningratetest,th
5、eburningtimeismeasuredoveradistanceof100mmandtherateofburningisdetermined.ThetestmethoddescribedhereisbasedonthetestprocedureadoptedbytheDepartmentofTransportationfromtheUnitedNationsregulationsfortheinternationaltransportationofdangerousgoodsandiscontainedinAppendixE
6、toPart173of49CFR.3.0INTERFERENCES3.1Inlaboratoryteststheburningrateofduplicaterunsisusuallyrepeatabletowithin10%.However,largedifferencesinburningratesmayoccurifexperimentalconditionsarenotheldconstant.Variationinairflowrates,particlesize,andmoisturecontentofthetestma
7、terialwillaffecttestresults.Therefore,atleasttriplicatedeterminationsoftheburningrateshouldbeconducted.3.2Particlesizeoftestmaterialcanaffectnotonlytheburningrate,butalsotheignitionofthematerial.Therefore,theparticlesizeofthetestmaterialshouldbethesameforeachtestrun.T
