2、notbedoubted(seeIanHunter,TheHistoryofTheory,CriticalInquiry33[Autumn2006]:78112).Theessayrevivesacertainnumberofthethemescrucialtotheantitheoreticalandspecificallyantidialecticalpolemicwagedwithintheoryitselfafewyearsagodenunciationsofidealism,totalization,teleo
3、logy,andthelikewhilereidentifyingthesethemeswithseeminglynovellabelsdrawnfromHuntershistoricalresearchonwhathearguestohavebeenRivalEnlight-enments,namely,anoppositionbetweenuniversitymetaphysicsandcivilphilosophyineighteenth-centuryGermanthought.1Thisbookpositst
4、heexistenceofahistoricaldebatebetweenincompatibletraditions,whichhethereratherobsessivelydocumentsandthenendowsitwithcontemporarysignificance,insofarasitleadshimtowonderwhynoonehaseverperceivedit.Heconcludesthatthetriumphoftheallegedlymeta-physicaltraditionhasbee
