2、eVoltageVariableFrequency(VVVF)inverterdrives.Particularbenefitsincludesupplyharmoniccontrolandtheavoidanceofchoppersupplystabili-zationforDCsupplysystems.ThispaperdescribesoneapproachtothedesignofsuchasystemwhichisintentionallyequallyapplicabletoLocomotives,Ele

3、ctricMultipleUnits(EMU),andLightRailVehicles(LRV).Inordertoachievethis,amodularapproachwastaken.Thedesignwasstructuredsothatanyspecificsystemdesigncouldbeconstructedfromastandardsetofparts.Thesearethenassembledintoasingleunitasrequiredfortheapplication.Thedesign

4、isbasicallyseparatedintothecontrolelectronicsandthepowerelectronicsandisillustratedbyitsapplicationtoanEMUoperatingonNetworkRail’s750VDCthirdrailsystem.CONTROLELECTRONICSThecontrolelectronicsisbasedonamicroprocessorsystemdesignedspecificallyfortractionsystemsand

5、hasbeenproveninpreviousapplications.Thisisa16-bitracksystemcomprisedofseveralstandardmodules:ControlMicrocomputerboardAnalogueInput/OutputinterfaceDigitalInput/Outputinterface.Theseareinterconnectedviathemaininterfacebus,andperformtheoverallsystemsupervisoryfunc

6、tions,interfacingtothevehiclecontrolandtransducersystems,aswellasprovidingthein-builtdiagnosticfacilities.Thesystemisstructuredtoprovidecomputingcapabilitiesatlevelssubordinatetothemainsystem.Inthisapplicationtwosuchlevelsareprovidedwithinasingledrivecontrollerm
