2、redAmerica'sindependencetotheworldandourpurposestotheAlmighty,theyknewthatAmerica,toendure,wouldhavetochange.Notchangeforchange'ssake,butchangetopreserveAmerica'sideals;life,liberty,thepursuitofhappiness.Thoughwemarchtothemusicofourtime,ourmissionistimeless.EachgenerationofAmericansmustdefinewh
3、atitmeanstobeanAmerican.Onbehalfofournation,Isalutemypredecessor,PresidentBush,forhishalf-centuryofservicetoAmerica.AndIthankthemillionsofmenandwomenwhosesteadfastnessandsacrificetriumphedoverDepression,fascismandCommunism.Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsoftheColdWarassumesnewresponsibilitie
4、sinaworldwarmedbythesunshineoffreedombutthreatenedstillbyancienthatredsandnewplagues.Raisedinunrivaledprosperity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworld'sstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinessfailures,stagnantwages,increasinginequality,anddeepdivisionsamongourpeople.WhenGeorgeWashingtonfirsttooktheoat
5、hIhavejustsworntouphold,newstraveledslowlyacrossthelandbyhorsebackandacrosstheoceanbyboat.Now,thesightsandsoundsofthisceremonyarebroadcastinstantaneouslytobillionsaroundtheworld.Communicationsandcommerceareglobal;investmentismobile;technologyisalmostmagical;andambitionforabetterlifeisnowunivers
6、al.Weearnourlivelihoodinpeacefulcompetitionwithpeopleallacrosstheearth.Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy.ThisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillionsofAmericanswhoareabletocompeteandwininit.But
