2、ityinliterature.ChineseAmericanliterature,whichreferstothewritingswritteninEnglishbyChinesepeopleborninAmerican,isagrowingnewfield.ItplaysanimportantroleinAmericanLiterature.SoitisnecessaryforustohaveanoverviewofthehistoryofChineseAmericanliterature.ChineseAmericanliteratureal
3、readyhasahistoryofover100years.Inalongperiodofyears,ChineseAmericanliteratureseesadifficultstagefromtheedgeoftheculturetomainstreamculture.ChineseAmericanliteraturecanbetracedbacktothelatenineteenthcenturywhengoldrushhappenedinCalifornia.Manypeoplelefttheirfamiliesandhomestota
4、keparticipateinthegold-kickingrushforseekingforfortune,buttotheirdisappointed,seekingforfortunewasanunimaginabledreaminthattheyweregivenmanydiscriminations.In1882,theChineseExclusionActwaspassed,whichmadeChineseAmericanpeopleincreasinglyunwelcomeinCalifornia.Inthiscase,theyhad
5、nootheroptionsbutsufferedhardships.Butformakingalivetheyhadtofindjob,goodandhighwagejobwerenotgiventothem,onlysomelowerwagejobcouldbeprovidedwithsuchaslaundryworkers,whichresultedintheirlifebeingpoor.Moreover,owingtothepersecutionofdiscriminationandlittle-educated,theycouldnot
6、haveopportunitiestostandonthesceneofliterature.Itwasnotuntil1943whentheSecondWorldWarbroughtout;theChineseExclusionActwasabolished,manyChineseAmericanpeoplehadtheprivilegethatAmericancitizenshad・TheycouldbecomecitizensoftheUS.GraduallymanyliteraryworksandChineseAmericanwritera
7、ppeared.MostcriticsheldthatEdithEaton,herpennameofHSuiSinFafwasthefirstChineseAmericanfemalewriterinNorthAmerica.HershortstorySetsMrs.SpringFragrancewasalsoregardedthefirstrealChineseAmericanLiterature.Themesofherworksarerich,itisnotlimitedtofightagainstrace,sexandclass,onthe
