2、nstructuraltransitionsandoffilmstrainonthemagneticpropertiesofnmferromagneticfilmsisdiscussed.Thestress-inducedbendingoffilm–substratecompositesisanalysedtoderiveinformationonfilmstressduetolatticemismatchorduetosurface-stresseffects.Themagneto–elasticcouplinginepitaxialfilmsisdet

3、ermineddirectlyfromthemagnetostrictivebendingofthesubstrate.Thecombinationofstressmeasurementswithmagneticinvestigationsbythemagneto-opticalKerreffect(MOKE)revealsthemodificationofthemagneticanisotropybyfilmstress.Stress–strainrelationsarederivedforvariousepitaxialorientationst

4、ofacilitatetheanalysisofthesubstratecurvature.Biaxialfilmstressandmagneto–elasticcouplingcoefficientsaremeasuredinepitaxialFefilmsinsituonWsingle-crystalsubstrates.Tremendousfilmstressofmorethan10GPaismeasuredinpseudomorphicFelayers,andtheimportantroleoffilmstressasadrivingforcefo

5、rtheformationofmisfitdistortionsandforinducingchangesofthegrowthmodeinmonolayerthinfilmsispresented.Thedirectmeasurementofthemagneto–elasticcouplinginepitaxialfilmsprovesthatthemagnitudeandsignofthemagneto–elasticcouplingdeviatefromtherespectivebulkvalue.Evenasmallfilmstrainoford
