2、a)fromcommunicativelanguageteachingtotask-basedlanguageteach-ing,(b)frommethod-basedpedagogytopostmethodpedagogy,and(c)fromsystemicdiscoverytocriticaldiscourse.Itisevidentthatduringthistransitionalperiod,theprofessionhaswitnessedaheightenedawarenessaboutcommunicativeandtask-basedlangu
3、ageteaching,aboutthelimitationsoftheconceptofmethod,aboutpossiblepostmethodpedagogiesthatseektoaddresssomeofthelimitationsofmethod,aboutthecomplexityofteacherbeliefsthatinformthepracticeofeverydayteaching,andaboutthevitalityofthemacrostruc-tures—social,cultural,political,andhistorical
4、—thatshapethemicro-structuresofthelanguageclassroom.Thisarticledealsbrieflywiththechangesandchallengesthetrend-settingtransitionseemstobebring-ingaboutintheprofession’scollectivethoughtandaction.Inthisstate-of-the-artessay,1ItracethemajortrendsinTESOLmethodssincethe1991publicationofthe
5、25thanniversaryissueofTESOLQuarterly.Ishall,therefore,refertotwooverlappingperiodsoftime:before1990andafter.Tosomewhatpre-emptmycentralthesis:Ifthefirstperiodiscalledaperiodofawareness,thesecondmaybecalledaperiodofawakening.Ifocusonthenatureandscopeofthetransitionfromawarenesstoawakeni
