2、etoagrowingdemandforhighlyproficientspeakersofforeignlanguages,bothfromprivateandgovernmentsectors,anaddedemphasishasbeenplacedonimmersion-typeprogramsthatofferextensivecontacttimeinatargetlanguage.Althoughtimeinatargetlanguagecertainlyplaysavaluableandneededrole,thisresearchde

3、monstratesthatinnovativecurriculardesignanddevelopmentintheuniversityforeignlanguageclassroomcanequalifnotexceeduptakethatoccursinextendedimmersionenvironments.Athoroughdescriptionoftheresearchdesignisprovided,includingtheapplicationof“memorybox”items,laboratoryself-recordings

4、,listening,reading,andwrittenexercises,andin-classpracticuminthetargetlanguageinvolvingBritishparliamentary-styledebateandModelUnitedNations.Preliminaryfindingsbasedoncertifiedpre-andpost-OralProficiencyInterviewandWrittenProficiencyTestratingssuggestthatsuchanapproachyieldssignifi

5、cantgain.Vygotsky’s(1978)ideaoftheZoneofProximalDevelopmentservesasausefulframeworkforexplainingahighpercentageofgainattheAdvanced-high/Superiorthresholdinoralproficiency,whereasnative-speakerwrittencorrectiverecastsfollowedbyrevisionandresubmissionofwrittenassignmentsofferause

6、fulparadigmforfacilitatingthresholdgainacrossarangeofproficiencylevelsforallparticipantsinvolved.THECORRELATIONBETWEENFOREIGNInteragencyLanguageRoundtable(ILR)scaleorlanguageuptakeandcontacttimehasreceivedtheequivalentofSuperiorlevelaccordingtothesignificantattentioninrecentyear
