1、SavingOurNaturalResourcesTheproblemIn1991theworld’spopulationwas5.4billionpeopleandgrowingexponentiallyatarateof1.8%.Thismeantthatin1992therewereanother97millionpeopletofeed,houseandclothe.Eventhenoneoutofeveryfivepeoplewenthungryanddidn’thavedrinkingwater.Moreandmoreourresourcesarebeingtapped

2、tothepointofexhaustion.Non-renewableresourcessuchasminerals,metalsandfossilfuelsmustbeconserved.Perpetuallyrenewableresourcessuchasflowingwateraswellassolarandwindenergymustbeusedandpotentiallyrenewableresourcessuchasourair,water,soilandanimalandplantlifemustbecaredfor.Bythinkingofourworldas"s

3、paceshipearth"itiseasiertoenvisionthedamageathrowawaysocietyhas,thepreciousnatureofournaturalresourcesandtheimportanceofrenewingtheresourceswestillhaveleft.Ourair:The1990FederalAirToxicsInventoryrankedPassaicCountyas6thintheStateofNewJerseyfortoxicemissions.52%ofthosetoxinswerefoundtocomefromm

4、anageablesources.Ofthese,38%werefrommobilesources(withcarsandtrucksmakingup29%)and9%fromnon-roadvehiclessuchaslawnmowersandboats.Another32%werefromsolventssuchasthoseusedindegreasers,pesticidesandcleaners.Ourwater:Theearthhasahugeamountofwater,yetonlyabout1%isfreshandusable.In1988,theNewJersey

5、DepartmentofEnvironmentalProtection(NJDEP)foundthat71%ofourmonitoredstreamsandriversweretoopollutedfrombacteriatoallowswimming.Theyalsofoundthat28%ofourcoastalwatershadtobeclosedtoshellfishharvesting.Oursoil:AccordingtheNJDEP,asof1992,only2%ofNewJerseyresidentsparticipatedinhazardouswastecolle
