2、xtendthewarningtotheterm"riot",especiallywherethefoodriotineighteenth-centuryEnglandisconcerned.Thissimplefour-letterwordcanconcealwhatmaybedescribedasaspasmodicviewofpopularhistory.AccordingtothisviewthecommonpeoplecanscarcelybetakenashistoricalagentsbeforetheFrenchRevolutio

3、n.Beforethisperiodtheyintrudeoccasionallyandspasmodicallyuponthehistoricalcanvas,inperiodsofsuddensocialdisturbance.Theseintrusionsarecompulsive,ratherthanself-consciousorself-activating:theyaresimpleresponsestoeconomicstimuli.Itissufficienttomentionabadharvestoradown-turnint

4、rade,andallrequirementsofhistoricalexplanationaresatisfied.Unfortunately,evenamongthosefewBritishhistorianswhohaveaddedtoourknowledgeofsuchpopularactions,severalhavelentsupporttothespasmodicview.Theyhavereflectedinonlyacursorywayuponthematerialswhichtheythemselvesdisclose.Thu
