2、erioratingsincethelate1990s.Inthelongerterm,however,Sino-Japaneserelationswilllikelybetestedorconstrainedbyfivekeysetsofissues:(1)territorialandresourcedisputes,(2)nationalismandissuesofmutualantipathy,(3)Taiwan’spoliticalstatus,(4)therapidriseofChina’
3、smilitarypower,and(5)theU.S.-Japansecurityalliance.ThemannerinwhichtheseissuesaremanagedorresolvedwilllikelyplayamajorroleinshapingtheSino-JapaneserelationshipandthustheoverallgeopoliticalenvironmentinEastAsia.Akeycomplicatingfactorintherelationship,ho
4、wever,isthepersistenceofdivergentworldviews:Chineseleadersappeartobemoreconsistentlypersuadedbyrealistnotionsofinternationalpolitics,whereasJapaneseleaderstendtofavorliberal-institutionalistvalues.Thetwocountriesmayusethesedifferentlensestoviewthesamei
