3、ofclinicaltherapeuticeffects.Owingtotheuncertaintyovertheeffectsofchronicantidepressanttreatmentsinmice,theseexperimentscomparedtheregulationofneurogenesis,neurotrophinlevels,andbehaviorproducedbychronicantidepressanttreatmentsbetweentwoinbredmousestrains,MRL/MpJandC57BL/6J.TheMRL/MpJstrai

4、nisassociatedwithenhancedwoundhealingandtissueregeneration,whereasC57BL/6Jmiceareusedcommonlyforbehavioralstudies.Proliferationandsurvivalofhippocampalprogenitorcellsweremeasuredusingflowcytometry,anewplatformthatrapidlyquantifiestheincorporationof5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine(BrdU).Hippocampalce

5、llproliferationwasincreasedsignificantlyafterchronicadministrationoffluoxetine(FLX:5,10mg/kg,intraperitoneal(i.p.),b.i.d.)ordesipramine(DMI:5,10mg/kg,i.p.,b.i.d.)for21daysinMRL/MpJmice,butnotinC57BL/6Jmice.Hippocampalprogenitorcellsbornpriortochronicantidepressanttreatmentswerenotaffectedi

6、neithermousestrain.Proteinlevelsofbrain-derivedneurotrophicfactor(BDNF)inMRL/MpJmicewereelevatedsignificantlyinthefrontalcortex,hippocampus,andamygdalaafterchronicFLXtreatment,butincreasedonlyinthefrontalcortexbychronicDMI.Incontrast,BDNFlevelsinC57BL/6Jmiceweredecreasedinthehippocampusand

7、increasedintheamygdalaafterchronicFLX,andweredecreasedinthebrainstemafterchronicDMI.Novelty-inducedhypophagia(NIH)wasusedtoexamineabehavioraleffectproducedbychronicantidepressanttreatment.MRL/MpJmice,chronicallyadministeredFLXorDMI,hadsignificantlyshorterlaten
