6、,Libertarians,andadherentsofotherpoliticalviewsaswell.Therearelawyers,farmers,plumbers,teachers,socialworkers,immigrationofficersandpeopleinthousandsofotheroccupations.Someliveinurbanareasandsomeinruralones.Givenallthisdiversity,canoneusefullytalkabout"Americans"?Probablyso,ifoneiscareful.HowAmerica
7、nsSeeThemselvesAmericansdonotusuallyseethemselves,whentheyareintheUnitedStates,asrepresentativesoftheircountry.Theyseethemselvesasindividualswhoaredifferentfromallotherindividuals,whetherthoseothersareAmericansorforeigners.Americansmaysaytheyhavenoculture,sincetheyoftenconceiveofcultureasanoverlayof
8、arbitrarycustomstobefoundonlyinothercountries.IndividualAmericansmaythinktheychosetheirownvalues,ratherthanhavinghadtheirvaluesandtheassumptionsonwhichtheyarebasedimposedonthembythesocietyinwhichtheywereborn.Ifyouaskthemtotellyousomethingabout"Americanculture,"theymaybeunabletoanswerandtheymayevende
