3、safunctionofcontactload,andiscomparedtothetraditionalGreenwoodandWilliamson(GW)andMajumdarandBhushan(MB)roughsurfacecontactmodels,whichrepresentsingle-scalestatisticalandfractalanalyses,respectively.Thecurrentmodelincorporatestheeffectofasperitydeformationsatmultiple

4、scalesintoasimpleframeworkformodelingthecontactbetweennominallyflatroughsurfaces.SimilartotheprotuberanceuponprotuberancetheoryproposedbyArchard,themodelconsiderstheeffectofhavingsmallerasperitieslocatedontopoflargerasperitiesinrepeatedfashionwithincreasingdetaildownt

5、othelimitsofcurrentmeasurementtechniques.Theparametersdescribingthesurfacetopography(arealasperitydensityandasperityradius)arecalculatedfromanFFTperformedofthesurfaceprofile.Thus,themodelconsidersmulti-scaleeffects,whichfractalmethodshaveaddressed,whileattemptingtomor

6、eaccuratelyincorporatethedeformationmechanicsintothesolution.AftertheFFTofarealsurfaceiscalculated,thecomputationalresourcesneededforthemethodareverysmall.Perhapssurprisingly,thetrendsproducedbythisnon-statisticalmulti-scalemodelarequitesimilartothosearisingfromtheGW
