2、ohnDonneasaffecting“themetaphysical.”ItwaslaterpopularizedbySamuelJohnsonin1781.SamualJohnsonwasthefirstperson,whoinventedthetermMetaphysicalPoetry,whiletalkingaboutthelifeofAbrahamCowleyinhisbook, "LivesoftheMostEminentEnglishPoets"(1779–81).Hesaysthat,inthebeg
3、inningof17thcentury,araceofwritersappeared,whomayberegardedasMetaphysicalPoets.EtymologistsareoftheviewthattheexpressionMetaphysicalisderivativeoftheLatinword Metaphysica,whichisacombinationoftwowords: Meta andPhysica.Theword meta means‘beyond’or‘after’.Itisapre
4、fixandisequallyusedinEnglish.Itreferstothingsorconcepts,whichareabstract.LiterallyPhysicameans‘work’,butinthiscase,itisconsideredassomething,whichishavingaconcreteshape.So,thetermMetaphysicalmaybedefinedas‘Beyondphysicalwork’.Inthisregard,R.SHillyerassertsthat"t
