2、asledtomanyeffortstomeasureorestimatewavestodevelopaclimatologyusefulincoastaldesign.Overthepast25years,ourabilitytoaccuratelyandcost-effectivelymeasurewaveshasimprovedconsiderably.Thishasresultedinanincreasingnumberofgaugingnetworksworldwide.Thispaperisasummaryofmanyofthosenetworks.Informationon
3、thenetworkswillinclude,whereavailable,thetypegaugesused,locationsofstations,additionaldatacollected,anddatadistributionmeans.IntroductionBecausemanywavegaugingprogramsarelocallyinstalledandoperated,theyareknownonlytotheiroperators.OnlyafewofthenetworksareassociatedwiththeWorldMeteorologicalOrgani
4、zation(WMO)andhavetheirdatadistributedworldwideontheGlobalTelecommunicationsSystem(GTS).InformationaboutthenetworksoperatedbytheU.S.NationalDataBuoyCenter(NDBC),CanadianAtmosphericEnvironmentService(AES),andtheUnitedKingdomMeteorologicalOfficewasrelativelyeasytoacquire.Thesmallernetworkshavebeena
5、challenge.Thatchallengehasbeenoffset,though,bythewillingnessofmostnetworkoperators,onceidentified,toshareinformation.Tomostcoastalscientistsandengineers,thesmallnetworksarethemostinteresting.Thelargenetworks,oftenfundedbythecountry'sweatherservice,arewellknown.Butmostnetworkoperators—orpotentialo
