2、astranslationmemories,data-basedmachinetranslation,andcollaborativetranslationmanagementsystems,farfrombeingmerelyaddedtools,arealteringtheverynatureofthetranslator’scognitiveactivity,socialrelations,andprofessionalstanding.Herewearguethattechnologiesfirstaffectmemorycapacityinsuchawaythatth
3、eparadigmaticisimposedmorefrequentlyonthesyntagmatic.Itfollowsthatthetranslatingactivityisenhancedinitsgenerativemoment,yetpotentiallyretardedinthemomentofselection,wherethevaluesofintuitionandtextflowbecomedifficulttorecuperate.Theredeeminggraceofnewtechnologiesmayneverthelesslieinnewmodeso
4、fopeningtranslationtothespaceofvolunteertranslation,wherehumanizingdialoguecanentertheinternalspaceoftranslationdecisions.Theregimeoftheparadigmaticmaythusbeembeddedinnewmodesofsocialexchange,wheretranslationbecomesoneofthefivebasiclanguageskills.1.Memorycomplicatesdecision-makingTechnologys
5、houldhelpuswithwhateverwearedoing.Theapeusesasticktoretrievethebanana–wereachfurther,sowecandomore.Technologythusextendsthewaysweinteractwiththeworld:ourarms,oursight,ourcapacitytohear,touch,tomoveoverdistance.Whichoftheseextensionsmostvitallyaffectwhatwedowithlanguage?Thequestionallowsforma
6、nysuppositions.Thetechnologiesoftransportandcommunicationradicallystretchthecross-culturalsituationsinwhichspeechactsarecarriedout,ultimatelyalteringtheconfigurationofcultures,nevermoresothaninaglobalizingage.Thosesituationsoftencallfortranslation,sincetheyarecross-cultural,sowewouldnotbewro
