2、hysiologicalprocessesinhumansandanimals.Besidesitsapplicationinclinicaldiagnoses,PETisregardedasakeytechniqueinneurosciencetoinvestigatethefunctionalarchitectureofthehumanbrain.Italsoprovidesvaluableinformationfortreatmentplanninginoncologyandcardiology.Today’sachievementsinresolvingthesizea

3、ndstateoftumors,thetimecourseofphysiologicalvariablesininfarctedtissueorthelocalizationoffunctionalactivationsarecloselyrelatedtothescanner’sperformance,whichitselfissubjecttolimitations,eitherinherenttothemethodofPET,orduetotechnicaloreconomicalreasons.Inordertoappreciatethecharacteristicfe

4、aturesofPET,thisreportstartswithareviewdescribingthedevelopmentofthetomographictechniques.Thisalsoincludestheconceptsofimagereconstructionfromprojections.ItthenpresentsthephysicalbackgroundandthebasicprinciplesofPET.ThisreportwillalsorelatethecapacityofcurrentPETscannerstotypicalapplications
