2、gplantsintheSoutheast.Thesurveyresponseswerereturnedfor1999productiondataandrepresentedapproximately18%ofOSBproductioninthesurveyregion.All3LCIdatapresentedhereinwerebasedonastandardproductionunitof0.88mOSBpanelproduct(10002ft,3/8-inchbasis).SoutheasternOSBrequi
3、res771.6kg(1701lb,oven-drybasis)ofroundwoodrawmaterialinput.545.7kg(1203lb)ofthisinputendsinfinalOSBproduct,givingatotalwoodrecoveryof71%.Theremainingwoodinputendsaswoodresidueforfuel,woodresiduessoldasco-products,andwoodwastesenttothelandfill.On-siteenergyrequi
4、rementsforsoutheasternOSBare5261MJ(4.99millionBTU).Heatenergyisthelargestenergyneed,89.6%ofwhichisgeneratedfromcombustionofwoodresidues.182kWh(655MJheatequivalent)ofelectricityisrequiredforprocessingOSB.Thehighestuseoffossilfuel(naturalgas)isusedtoreduceVOCemiss
5、ionsintheemissioncontrolprocessat465MJ(4.4millionBTU).Consideringthecarboncycleforon-siteOSBproductionforaunitofproduct,OSBrequires396kg(873lb)ofcarbonfromwoodrawmaterial.Othercarboninputisutilizedintheformofresins/wax(11.4kg/25lb)andfuels(12.3kg/27lb).OSBholds2
6、90kg(640lbor69%oftotalcarboninput)carbon.Asmallpercentageofcarbon(4%)isheldintheformofco-products(e.g.mulchandwoodresidues).Theremainderofcarbonisreleasedbacktonatureintheformofnon-fossilCO2(24%),fossilCO2(3%),VOCsandotheremissions(0.4%).Keywords:Life-cycleinven
