2、naldisparitybothinresearchoutputandpreferentialresearchareasisthemainpurposeofthisstudy.Forthisstudy,weinvestigatedtheresearchoutputsofall31regions(27provincesand4municipalities)inmainlandChina.TheinvestigateddatasetwassourcedfromCNKI,oneofChinaslargestdomestic
3、academicdatabases.Tomeasureresearchpreferencesbetweenregions,weusedthefunctionofcosinedistanceratherthanEuclideandistance.Clusteringmethodwasemployedtoclas-sifytheregionsaccordingtotheirsimilarity/disparity.Intheend,sixclustersweregen-erated.Eachclusterisdiffer
4、entinresearchpreferences.Forexample,InnerMongoliainClusterDisfeaturedwiththeemphasisonanimalhandcraft;whileHubeiprovinceinClusterAischaracterizedbyawiderangeofresearchareas.KeywordsResearchpreferenceChinaCNKIClusterVosViewerIntroductionChinahasbecomeaworldl
5、eaderinscienceandtechnologyproduction(Xieetal.2014).In2015,Chinapublishedabout300,000papersindexedbyWebofScience,whichaccountedfor16.6%globallyandrankedsecond.ManypapershavestudiedtheperformanceofChinasacademicdisciplines,whichisusuallymeasuredbytheamountofscie
