3、mberofmethodsforprobingandunderstandingthelarge-scalestructureofnetworksthatevolveovertime.Wefocusinparticularoncitationnetworks,networksofreferencesbetweendocumentssuchaspapers,patents,orcourtcases.Wedescribethreedifferentmethodsofanalysis,onebasedonanexpectation-maximizationalgorithm,onebased
4、onmodularityoptimization,andonebasedoneigenvectorcentrality.UsingthenetworkofcitationsbetweenopinionsoftheUnitedStatesSupremeCourtasanexample,wedemonstratehoweachofthesemethodscanrevealsignificantstructuraldivisionsinthenetworkandhow,ultimately,thecombinationofallthreecanhelpusdevelopacoherento
