2、57billionin2011to$1trillionin2020.Acrosskeycategories,frompharmaceuticalstomedicalproductsandconsumerhealth,Chinaremainsoneoftheworld’smostattractivemarkets,andisbyfarthefastest-growingofallthelargeemergingmarkets.Itisnotsurprisingthatmultinationalsareflockingtotakeadvantag
3、eoftheopportunities,butlong-termsuccessforallparticipantsisbynomeansassured.AlthoughweremainoptimisticabouttheoveralloutlookforthehealthcaremarketinChina,webelieveitwillbecomemoredifficultformultinationalstocompete.Weexpectaclearerseparationbetweenwinnersandlaggards,andlate
4、entrantscouldfaceastruggletoachieverealtraction.Atahighlevelofanalysis,threethemeswillshapeChina’shealthcaremarketinthecomingyears:thecontinuationofeconomicanddemographictrends,furtherhealthcarereform,andthepoliciesarticulatedinthegovernment’s12thFive-YearPlan(FYP).Someofth
5、eseforceswillhavepositiveimplicationsformultinationalcompanies,forexample,improvementsininfrastructure,thebroadeningofinsurancecoverage,andsignificantsupportforinnovation.Someofthemwillhavenegativeimplications,forexample,pressuresonpricing,andtheriseoflocalchampions.Insomes
6、ituationstheforcescomeintodirectopposition,forexample,inthebidtoreconcileuniversalhealthcarecoverageatlowcostwithrewardinginnovation.Toparaphrasevice-premierLiKeqiang,thecountry’shealthcaresystemreformhasentered“unchartedwaters.”1Inthiscontextweidentifyeightprinciplesthatar
