2、itsofacombinedMPLS-TPandIP/MPLS-basedsolution,andhowPseudowire-basedMPLScanbeadoptedfortransportnetworkservices.WhyMPLS-TP?Tomorrow'snetworkwillmostlycarrypackets.Asaresult,anevolutionofexistingtime-divisionmultiplexing(TDM)-basedtransportnetworksistakingplace,andnewarchitectures
3、optimizedtocarrypacketsarebeingdefined.Thefunctionofatransportnetworkistocarryinformationbetweenserviceedgedevices.ThesedevicescouldbeDigitalSubscriberLineAccessMultiplexers(DSLAMs),gateways,T1/E1aggregators,broadbandremoteaccessservers(BRAS),etc.Traditionaltransportsystemsbasedo
4、nSDH/SONETplatformsprovidelow-speedbandwidthgranularitynetworkservicesaswellashigh-speedlong-haultransmissionservices.Circuit-switchedtransportnetworkserviceswithfixedbandwidthgranularity(64Kbps,1.5Mbps,2Mbps,50Mbps,150Mbps,600Mbps,etc.)wereemulatedusingconnection-oriented,packet
5、-switched(CO-PS)technologiesandsimilarmanaged-bandwidthservices.However,intheaccess/aggregationandmetrodomains,thereisadesirebycarrierstosimplifypackettransportnetworkinginordertoreducecapitalexpenditures(CapEx)andoperationalexpenses(OpEx)intheirnext-generationnetworks.MPLSiscons
6、ideredaleadingconnection-orientedpackettransportnetworkingtechnology.Recentlymanycarriershaveshowntheirdesiretoconvergetheirnext-generationcorenetworksontoMPLS,andsubsequentlyhavedeployedtheircorenetworksusingMPLS.GiventhedeploymentofMPLSnetworksandthedesiretoalignpacketnetworkin
7、gwithmoretraditionaltransportoperationsmethods,CiscoisleadingalargeefforttostandardizeasimplifiedversionofMPLSfortransportnetworks.ThisstandardizedapproachisknownasMPLSTransportProfile(MPLS-TP)intheIETF(groups–MPLS,PWE3,andCCAMP)andtheITU-TSG15.Inadditiontoofferingtraditionaltran
