2、them,andoutlinesthemostprobablesolutionstothesechallenges.INTRODUCTIONAsignificantnumberoffutureNASAdeep-spacemissionsmayrequirenavigationcapabilitiesandperformancebeyondthatneededbypastandcurrentmissions.OverthelastfiftyyearsNASAhassentprobestofly-by,orbit,an
3、dlandonanumberofsolarsystembodies,performingthosemissionsthatcouldbeaccomplishedwiththenavigationalmeansofthetime.Asnavigationalmeanshaveimproved,thetypesofmissionsthatcouldbeexecutedhaveexpanded,allowingforincreasedscienceandexplorationreturns.Thesamecanbeexp
4、ectedforthenexttwentyfiveyears,withenhancednavigationcapabilitiesenablingnewtypesofmissionsthatcouldnotbeexecutedotherwise.FUTUREMISSIONSETANDCHALLENGESThesetoffutureNASAdeep-spacemissionschangessporadically,asmissionroadmapsareupdatedandmissionsareaddedtoorre
5、movedfromtheforecast.Thesetofmissionsinafive-yearhorizonisusuallywellknownandfairlystable,buttryingtoforecastuptotwenty-fiveyears1fromnowrequiressomeeducatedguesswork.Inapreviouspaperwedescribedtheprocessusedtoupdatetheforecast,andanalyzedthesetofmissionsplann
6、edatthattime.Sincethentheforecasthasnotchangedsignificantlyandaverysimilarsetcanbeusedatthecurrenttime.Table1listssomeofthemostchallengingcurrentandfuturedeep-spacemissionsthatNASAwillormaycarryoutinthenexttwentyfiveyears.*NavigationandMissionDesignElementMana
