3、unksexhibitmnemonicphonologicalrepetition—alliteration—forexample,thentheL2learner’staskmaybelessdaunting.WenoteevidencethatalliterationisrelativelycommoninlexicalchunksinEnglish.Becauseofthisevidence,threeexperimentswerecarriedoutinvolvingadvancedlevelyoungadul
4、t,Dutch-speakinglanguagemajors.Experiment1addressesthepossibilitythattwo-wordalliterativephrasessuchasdaydreamaremorememorablethan‘norepetition’phrasessuchasphonecall.Experiment2assessesthelikelihoodthatalliterationinchunkswillbeautonomouslynoticed.Experiment3as
5、sessestheeffectontherecallofalliterativechunksofverybriefteacher-lednoticingofthephonemic/orthographicrepetitioninvolved.Collectively,theresultsoftheexperimentssuggestthatalliterationhasconsiderablemnemonicpotentialthatcouldbeexploitedtofacilitatechunk-learning,
6、butalsothatlearnersarenotverylikelytounlockthispotentialautonomously.INTRODUCTIONItiswidelybelievedthatpatternsofsoundrepetitionsuchasrhymeandalliterationareparticularlynoticeableandmemorable(Cook2000).Iftheyare,thenL2lexicalchunkswhichshowsuchrepetitionmaybeeas
7、ierforlearnerstoremember(BoersandLindstromberg2005).Aswewillsee,thecatchinessofrhymeiswellevidencedinvariouscontexts,althoughoftenwithoutobviousdirectbearingonthenoticingandrecallofchunksinL2.Thesalienceandmemorabilityofalliteration,however,havebeenmuchlessinves
