2、rgesof0.64–100kgTNTequivalentwereusedduringtheseair-andunderwater-blasttests.Thedifferenceinresponseanddamageinflictedfromunderwater-andair-blastloadingwasassessedfromstrain-fieldmeasurementsandpost-blastspecimenanalysis.Proceduresformonitoringthestructuralresponseofsu

3、chmaterialsduringblasteventshavebeendevised.High-speedphotographywasemployedduringtheair-blastloadingofGFRPandCFRPsandwichpanels,inconjunctionwithdigitalimagecorrelation(DIC),tomonitorthedeformationofthesestructuresundershockloading.Failuremechanismshavebeenrevealedu

4、singDICandconfirmedinpost-testsectioning.TheimprovedperformanceofcompositesandwichstructureswithCFRPskinscomparedtoGFRPequivalentconstructionsisdemonstratedforair-blastexperiments.StraingaugeswereusedtomonitorthestructuralresponseofsimilarsandwichmaterialsandGFRPtubul

5、arlaminatesduringunderwatershocks.Theeffectofthesupporting/backingmedium(airorwater)ofthetargetfacingtheshockhasbeenidentifiedduringthesestudies.Mechanismsoffailurehavebeenestablishedsuchascorecrushing,skin/corecracking,delaminationandfibrebreakage.Straingaugedatasuppo

6、rtedthemechanismsforsuchdamage.Atransitioninbehaviourwasobservedinthesandwichpanelswhensubjecttoanunderwaterblastasopposedtoanair-blastload.Damagemechanismsnotablyshiftedfromdistributedcoreshearfailureoriginatingfromregionsofhighshearinairblasttoglobalcorecrushinginu
