5、echnology,P.O.Box5048,2600GADelft,TheNetherlandsABSTRACT:Theperformanceofcontinuummaterialmodelsformesolevelmod-elingofprogressivefailureincompositelaminatesisexamined.Twodifferentcon-tinuummodelsareused:acontinuumdamagemodelandasofteningplasticitymodel.Itisshownhowmesh

6、-independentresultscanbeobtainedwithbothmodelsbyintroducingaviscosityterm.Thecapabilityofthemodelstorepresentcomplexintraplyfailurebehaviorisassessedbymeansofananalysisofanotchedplate,whereinterfaceelementsareusedtomodeldelamination.Properresultsfromdifferentmodelingapp

7、roachesareshown,butuponcalibrationalimitationofthecontinuumapproachintherepresentationofmatrixfailureisencountered.Withasecondexample,thislimitationisemphasizedfurtherandexplainedasaconsequenceofthehomogenizationthatisinherentincontinuummodels,irrespectiveoftheappliedfa
