2、ormeasurementiscriticaltothesuccessfuldevel-opmentoftheory.Thispaperpresentsatechnique—theGo/No-goAssociationTask(GNAT)—thatjoinsafamilyofexistingtechniquesformeasuringimplicitso-cialcognitiongenerally,withafocusonattitude(evaluation).Toexpandthemea-su
3、rementpotentialsuppliedbyitsclosestcousin,theImplicitAssociationTest(IAT),theGNATcanbeusedtoexamineautomaticsocialcognitiontowardasingletargetcategory.Thatis,theGNATobtainsameasureofimplicitsocialcognitionwithoutrequiringthedirectinvolvementofcomplemen
4、taryorcontrastingobjects.Also,byimplementingaresponsedeadlineintheprocedure,thisversionoftheGNATtradesoffresponselatencyforsensitivityasthedependentvariablemea-sure.Weillustratethetechniquethroughaseriesofexperiments(1-5)usingsimpleattitudeobjects(bugs
5、andfruit).InExperiment6,theGNATisusedtoinvestigateat-titudestowardrace(blackandwhite)andgender(maleandfemale).Toexplorethetheoreticalleverageofferedbythistool,Experiment6putstotestarecurringques-tionconcerningautomaticin-groupfavoritismversusout-groupd
6、erogation.Re-sultsdemonstratethedualpresenceofbothout-groupderogation(e.g.,negativitytowardblackAmericans)andin-groupfavoritism(positivitytowardwhiteAmeri-cans),afindingthatemergesbecausetheGNAToffersthepotentialforseparablemeasuresofattitudetowardthet
7、wogroups.Throughtheseexperiments,theGNATisshowntobeaneffectivetoolforassessingautomaticpreferencesaswellasre-solvingpersistentquestionsthatrequiremeasuresofindividualattitudeobjectswhilemaintainingtheadvantagesofresponsecompetitiontasks.Theauthorsthank
