3、nceoffourmaximsofconversation,whichspeak-ersareassumedtofollow.Armedwiththisknowledge,listenersareabletointerpretutterancesinacontextuallysensibleway.Thisaccountenjoyswideacceptance,butithasnotgoneunchallenged.Specifically,RelevanceTheoryoffersanexplicitlycognitiveaccountofutteranceinterpr

4、etationthatpresentsaradicalchallengetotheneo-Griceanparadigm.Evolutionaryconsiderationsareonewayinwhichwecanchoosebetweencompetingtheories.Asimplegame-theoreticmodeloftheevolutionofcommunicationispresented,anditisusedtoderiveanumberofbasicqualitiesthatwillbesatisfiedbyallevolvedcommunicati
