2、studentsinasuburbanareaofTaiwan.Design:Prospective,comparative,consecutive,interventionalstudy.Participants:Elementaryschoolstudents7to11yearsofagerecruitedfrom2nearbyschoolslocatedinasuburbanareaofsouthernTaiwan.Intervention:Thechildrenofoneschoolparticipatedintheinterventions,whereasthosefrom
3、theotherschoolservedasthecontrolgroup.Theinterventionsconsistedofperformingarecessoutsidetheclassroom(ROC)programthatencouragedchildrentogooutsideforoutdooractivitiesduringrecess.Thecontrolschooldidnothaveanyspecialprogramsduringrecess.MainOutcomeMeasures:Datawereobtainedbymeansofaparentquestio
4、nnaireandocularevaluationsthatincludedaxiallengthandcycloplegicautorefractionatthebeginningandafter1year.Results:Fivehundredseventy-onestudentswererecruitedforthisstudy,ofwhom333studentspartici-patedintheinterventionalprogram,and238studentswereinthecontrolschool.Atthebeginningofthestudy,therewe
5、renosignificantdifferencesbetweenthese2schoolswithregardtoage,gender,baselinerefraction,andmyopiaprevalence(47.75%vs.49.16%).After1year,newonsetofmyopiawassignificantlylowerintheROCgroupthaninthecontrolgroup(8.41%vs.17.65%;P0.001).TherewasalsosignificantlylowermyopicshiftintheROCgroupcomparedwith
6、thecontrolgroup(0.25diopter[D]/yearvs.0.38D/year;P0.029).ThemultivariateanalysisdemonstratedthatthevariablesofinterventionoftheROCprogramandhigherschoolyearprovedtobeaprotectivefactoragainstmyopiashiftinnonmyopicsubjects(P0.020andP0.017,respectively).Formyopicsubjects,schoolyearwastheonlyv
7、ariablesignificantlyassociatedwithmyopiaprogression(P0.006).Conclusions:Outdooractivitiesduringclassrecessinschoolhaveasignificanteffectonmyopiaonsetandmyopicshift.Suchactivitieshaveaprominenteffectonthecontrolofmyopiashift,especia
