2、Americansocietyasawholeinvariouswaysandtovariousdegrees.TheUnitedStatesofAmericawasnolongerthesameafterthe1960s.TheCivilRightsmovementwasamajormovementwhichbeganwiththeSupremeCourtdecisionofBrownv.BoardofEducationofTopekain1954andtheMontgomery(Alabama)busboycottof1955.Ma
3、rtinLutherKingJr.(1929-1968),asakeyleaderofthemovement,playedasignificantandirreplaceablerole.HisnameisassociatedwiththeMarchonWashingtonin1963andhisfamousspeech“IHaveaDream”,deliveredinfrontoftheLincolnMemorial.HewasawardedNobelPeacePrizein1964.Intheacceptancespeech,Dr.
4、Kingsaid,“IaccepttheNobelPrizeforPeaceatamomentwhen22millionsNegroesoftheUnitedStatesofAmericaareengagedinacreativebattletoendthelongnightofracialinjustice.Iacceptthisawardonbehalfofacivilrightsmovementwhichismovingwithdeterminationandamajesticscornforriskanddangertoesta
5、blishareignoffreedomandaruleofjustice.”Dr.Kingthenaskedwhythisprizewasawardedtothismovement.Hisanswerwas,“ThisawardwhichIreceiveonbehalfofthatmovementisaprofoundrecognitionthatnonviolenceistheanswertothecrucialpoliticalandmoralquestionofourtime—theneedformantoovercomeopp
6、ressionandviolencewithoutresortingtoviolenceandoppression…NegroesoftheUnitedStates,followingthepeopleofIndia,havedemonstratedthatnonviolenceisnotsterilepassivity,butapowerfulmoralforcewhichmakesforsocialtransformation.”Dr.Kingwaslovedandrespectedbymanybutwashatedbythewhi
7、tesupremacists.OnthenightofApril3,1968,Dr.Kingdeliveredapowerfulsermoninwhichhesaid“I’vebeentothemountaintop”and“I’veseentheglory”ofthevisionthatwascoming.“Imaynotgettherewithyou.”Hesaid,“butIwantyoutoknowthatweasapeoplewillgettothepromised-land.”Thenextnight,Kingwasshot
