2、ups,behaviours,andformsfollowingthisdichotomousandradicalseparationhasbecomeawayoflabellingratherthanexplainingsimilaritiesanddifferencesincommunicativeapproachesindiverseculturalsettings.ThispapertakesadifferentapproachtocomprehendthecomplexityofHall’soriginalthinkingbyfocusingonthenotion
3、sofcontextandcontextualizingandattempting“tofillintheblanks.”ThepaperpresentsarevisiontoHall’s"Context&Meaning"diagramandredirectsscholars'focustowhatislost-in-transmissionininterculturalcommunicativeinteractions.INTRODUCTIONCentrallylocatedattheintersectionofcross-culturalmanagementandint
4、erculturalcommunicationisthenotionofhigh-context(HC)culturesandlow-context(LC)cultures,creditedtoEdwardT.Hall(1976).Areviewoftheliteratureandtextbooksinbothfields(Chaney&Martin,2005;Chen&Starosta,1998;Cho&Cheon,2005;Ess&Sudweeks,2005;Gudykunst,W.B.&Kim,Y.Y.,1992;St.Amant,2002;Wurtz,2005)re
5、vealsthatthetermsarestillinfluentialandwidelyusedtoday,makingthemacoreconcepttoexplaindifferencesincommunicationacrosscultures.Independentlyofitsultimateexplanatoryvalue,theconceptismostlyusedasaclassificatorydeviceofcommunicationstylesamongindividualsand/orcommunicationpatternsamongcultur
6、algroups.ThedivisionofculturalgroupsandtheindividualswhobelongtothosegroupsalongtheHC/LCdividehasbecome—aswewillseebelow—awayoflabellingindividualsandgroupsfromdifferentculturalbackgrounds.Hall’soriginalintentiontousethetwinconceptsasameansofexplainingshadesofgreyinhumancommunication(rathe
7、rthanstarkcontrastsbetweenblackandwhiteoversimplifications)hasbeenlostinthemanytranslationsthattheHC/LCconcepthasgonethrough.Thispaperisconcernedwithexploringthefoundationalnotionofhigh-andlow-contextcultures;anotionwhichhasbeenusedinavarietyofways.Contextista
