2、avepreviouslybeenproposedfornaturallanguageunderstanding.ButmanyofthemhavebeenconfinedtoillustrationsintextbooksratherthanbeenactuallyimplementedinlargescaleNLsystems.Thefactisthatdifferentrepresentationschemesareappropriateunderdifferentsituations.Wepresentacontextsensitivemodelforconc

3、eptunderstanding.Ourmodelemphasizesknowledgeutilizationratherthanitsrepresentation.Manydifferentrepresentationschemescanbecombinedinourunderstandingmodelandthespecificschemeofrepresentationisimmaterial.Ourconceptunderstandingstrategycanmodelmanyhumanbehaviorsandreflectpersonaldifference

4、s.OurmodelhasbeenappliedtoseveralNLPsystemsandobtainedverysatisfactoryresults.Ourmaingoalistoreducetheproblemofmodelinghumanunderstandingtothatofmakingcorrectselectionunderdifferentcontexts.Thelatterprovidesanewdirectionfortheimplementationofintelligentsystems.1.IntroductionInartificial

5、intelligence,knowledgerepresentationisverycrucialforsimulatinghumanunderstanding.Severalrepresentations(cf.[1-4],[6-9])havebeenproposedforsyntacticandsemanticanalysisinnaturallanguageprocessing.ButfewofthemhaveactuallybeenimplementedinrealworldNLPsystems.Wetakeadifferentrouteherebyprese

6、ntingacontextsensitivemodelforconceptunderstanding.Ourmodelemphasizestheknowledgeutilizationratherthanitsrepresentation.IthasbeenappliedtoseveralNLPsystemsandobtainedverysatisfactoryresults.Furthermore,certainelementsofuncertaintyareembeddedinthemodelsothatitcanbettersimulatehumanunders

7、tanding.Ourbasicassumptionisthatthespecificschemesusedforrepresentingthemeaningofaconceptisnotcrucialaslongastheysufficetoreflectdifferentaspectsoftheconcept.Therearemanyphenomenasupportingtheaboveargument.Considertwoexamplesbelow:(1)understandingtheproofofamathematicstheorem:W
