3、ion.However,thereisadifficultyinacceptingthiskindofcontributionaspotentiallylegiti-mate,forthereasonthatthereisnothingwrongforaprotagonisttohaveaninconsistentposition,inthesenseofcommittinghimselftomutuallyinconsistentpropositions.Ifso,anysuchchargeseemstobeirrelevant.Thequestionstobeansweredinthises
4、sayare:what,ifany,isthedialecticalrationaleforthistypeofcriticism,andinwhatsituations,ifany,isthiskindofchargedialecticallylegitimate?Itwillbeshownthattheseattackscanbedialecticallylegitimate,inspecialcircumstances,andthattheycanbeseenasstrate-gicmanoeuvreswhereapartyattemptstoreconcilehisdialectic

6、enthathehasdisplayedspecificbehaviour,hasbecomeinconsistentbyadvancingaparticularstandpoint.Inthispaper,thistypeofcriticismwillbedealtwithasaformofstrategicmanoeuvringbywhichanarguerattemptstobalancehisdialecticalwithhisrhetoricalobjectives(vanEemerenandHoutlosser,1999b,2002,2003).Themanoeuvringmake
7、supakindofpersonalattackthatcanbebroughtintoactionforseveralpurposes,butduetoitsfocusonstandpoints,allthesepurposeshavetodo,atleastinpart,2withtheconfrontationstageofacriticaldiscussion.318JANALBERTVANLAARA
