2、thesisofcapitalswitchingthatHarvey,followingHenriLefebvre,initiallyexpoundedinthe1970sand1980s.Thenubofthisargumentwasthatascapitalistproductionedgestowardperiodiccrisesofoveraccumulation,capital“switches”fromproductionperseintoproductionoftheurbanbuiltenvironmentasameanstoabsorbsurpluscapitalan
3、dhenceavert—ifonlytemporarily—crisis.AlthoughHarvey’sthesishasprovenextremelyinfluentialamongpoliticaleconomists,urbantheorists,andgeographersofvariousstripes,previousattemptstobuttressitwithempiricalevidencehavefailedtounearthanydemonstrableswitchingdynamicofthekindHarveytheorizes.Thisarticleana
4、lyzesdatafortheyearsleadingupto2007andtheunfoldingofthecurrenteconomiccrisis.FocusingprimarilyontheUnitedKingdom,itpresentstwoseparateanalysesthatsuggestaclearpatternofcapitalswitchingintothebuiltenvironmentsincetheturnofthemillennium:first,aswitchingofoverallprivate-sectorexpendituresand,second,
