2、mightbeengagingininvestmentbehaviorinthepre-industrialperiod,thisththpaperprovidesdemographicevidenceonChinaoverthe14to19centuries,aperiodwellbeforetheonsetofitsdemographictransitionandindustrializationtoinvestigatetherelationshipsbetweenhumancapital,fertility,andsocialmobility.Socialmobility,
3、bothupwardanddownward,wassubstantialduringmuchofthisperiod.Fertilitywaslinkedtohousehold’sobjectivesforupwardsocialmobility,whichdependedonhighlevelinvestmentsinchildeducation.Ifirstshowfertilityvariedacrossthestatusofhouseholds.Second,Iexaminethesiblingsizeandfamilycharacteristicsofmenwhoobta
